INHERITANCE RIGHT OF WOMEN
Inheritance rights are a cornerstone of economic empowerment, yet they remain one of the most neglected areas of gender justice due to a combination of patriarchal customs, lack of legal literacy, and the misinterpretation of religious and civil laws. In many communities, women are pressured to “gift” or waive their rightful share of ancestral property to their male relatives in exchange for continued social protection, a practice that perpetuates a cycle of financial dependency and poverty.
WEG recognizes that securing a woman’s legal share of land and assets is not just a matter of individual wealth, but a structural necessity for national prosperity. Our advocacy focuses on:
- Legal Literacy: Educating women on the specific provisions of the Inheritance Laws and the Anti-Deprivation of Women from Property Act, empowering them to claim their shares through formal legal channels.
- Administrative Reform: Lobbying with revenue departments and local administrations to ensure that mutation processes (the transfer of title) are transparent and that women are not excluded during the distribution of estates.
- Challenging Social Norms: Engaging with community leaders and male family members to redefine inheritance as a fundamental right rather than a discretionary favor, emphasizing that economic stability for women strengthens the resilience of the entire family unit.
By treating inheritance as a non-negotiable right, WEG is working to dismantle the systemic barriers that keep women economically marginalized, ensuring they have the capital and security to build independent futures.
