Acid Throwing
Acid throwing is one of the most heinous forms of gender-based violence, designed not to kill, but to inflict lifelong physical disfigurement, psychological trauma, and social exclusion. This targeted violence is frequently used as a tool of domestic control or “honor-based” revenge, leaving survivors to face systemic barriers in accessing specialized medical care, legal justice, and economic reintegration.
At WEG, our response to this atrocity is rooted in a multi-sectoral approach:
- Legislative Advocacy: We lobby for the stringent implementation of the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, which criminalizes acid-related violence and mandates life imprisonment and heavy fines for perpetrators.
- Regulation of Sale: We advocate for stricter monitoring and licensing of the sale of corrosive substances to prevent them from being used as weapons.
- Survivor-Centric Support: Through our partnerships, we work to ensure survivors have access to comprehensive rehabilitation, including reconstructive surgery and psychosocial counseling, while sensitizing law enforcement to handle these cases with the urgency and empathy they require.
By challenging the socio-cultural narratives that “justify” such brutality, WEG is committed to eradicating this practice and restoring the dignity and agency of those it targets.
