Climate Change
Climate change is an existential threat to Pakistan, manifesting in extreme weather patterns that directly compromise Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) infrastructure. Increasing frequencies of catastrophic flooding and prolonged droughts not only deplete safe drinking water reserves but also lead to the widespread contamination of existing sources, triggering surges in waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid. For women and adolescent girls, these disruptions are particularly severe; as primary water collectors, they face increased physical labor and safety risks, while the lack of functional sanitation facilities during climate disasters exacerbates the challenges of menstrual hygiene management and personal dignity.
WEG addresses the intersection of climate resilience and public health by advocating for gender-responsive WASH policies and disaster-resilient infrastructure. Our strategy focuses on empowering communities especially women with the technical knowledge to manage water resources sustainably and maintain hygiene standards during environmental crises. By lobbying for the integration of climate adaptation into national health frameworks and facilitating workshops on “Green WASH” practices, WEG ensures that the most vulnerable populations are not left behind. We believe that securing a climate-resilient WASH ecosystem is fundamental to achieving long-term health equity and safeguarding the developmental gains of our society.
